Plasman
Not sure if this is a good idea or not, but how about a thread for whatever you happen to be working on and want to share. If it's not worthwhile (or you can't be bothered) making a whole thread for your project, or you're just doing something on the side, show it and discuss it here! Plasman
Myself, just doing the first bit of painting in at least 5 years. Touching up some of my "rainbow" IG which is full of different mini lines. Behold the awesome power of washes! Here we have base colours, washed, then some attempts at highlights. I've been doing some shed work lately, fixing up an old trailer, and happily a "5ft rule" also applies for metalwork and painting. The 50/50 rule, does it look okay from 50ft away or whilst doing 50mph? Then you're sweet! Edited June 13, 2020 by Plasman
Plasman
Come on guys don't make me bump my own thread 😛 So despite not planning on playing until 9e releases, and only knowing one other person so far in my country town who plays... I'm already bit by the terrain bug again. Even found my old hirst art molds! Dead easy to bang out a bunch of blocks using them, I've got a cobblestone castle style mold and a sci-fi bunker block one. Made some nice buildings back in the day, which I assume all ended up forgotten about and "donated" to the FLGS!
Plasman
I RESORT ONCE MORE TO THIS FAILURE OF A GENERIC PAINTING THREAD 😁 Finally cracking on and painting my Indomitus marines, despite a dearth of people to actually roll dice with and having to pray to the spray can gods with sort-of-old cans of dulux flat white spray paint purchased long ago. EXTREMELY happy with the results of GWs super expensive black magic contrast paints + a wash. Initially blood angels red was way too bright but a wash seems to have toned it down. Keep having to stop myself from trying for too much time and detail, 3 foot rule applies! And even more so since who knows when I'll ever play with the damned things! I guess I can go all out on the captain model, try some damage and chipping etc. Edited May 8, 2021 by Plasman
Emplion
Did you use oils for your black lining?
Plasman
4 minutes ago, Emplion said: Did you use oils for your black lining? Nope, that's straight up blood angels red contrast paint followed by a heavyish nuln oil (black) wash. The quality of my photos don't do the contrast paint justice, it's really nice for a rookie like me who just wants to paint to a tt standard! (left mini has the wash, right is just the contrast paint) Still have to come to terms with getting the cream shoulder pads nice and crisp without getting them mixed up with the black edges! Plasman
I've got stuck into two boxes of Fireforge Games miniatures for my Generic Human Fantasy Army project. Always very interesting to try out non-GW plastic miniatures. The cast quality is certainly much lower than GW stuff, but to be completely honest that shouldn't be an issue at all using the 5ft rule, and most peoples painting skills aren't worthy of world-class models anyway! But it does show just how good GW stuff is by comparison. Though the price is just right, paid about $140 and have 12 knights and 48 footmen to build. Plasman
After a few months of no activity got some colour on my Generic Medieval Dudes! My 9yo kiddo also decided they wanted to do some painting, so I found a bunch of night gobbos and some zombie wolves for them, they did pretty good then we had a game of one page rules with them! It's nice to paint some dudes after so long not really putting brush to model, though I'm wary of how I'll have to put in some effort and maybe look up some guides to paint horses and their cloth tabbard-thingos nicely! If anyone has any suggestions on painting flat shields like the infantry have, that'd help too! I'm guessing I just need to try to freehand some basic heraldry colours on them, diagonal colour changes or quarters and such Edited November 17, 2021 by Plasman
b20f08
You could try transfers already created for you. This outfit is very well established and quite popular. https://www.littlebigmenstudios.com/
Gus
I did transfers on my Fireforge foot sergeant blokes and was really happy with them. They really help out with the paint job (mine was not so great). Think I got some of the official ones from battle flag (probs off ebay) but also love LBMS stuff too. I likes the worn look on the designs. But if you don't want to spend anything and you are good painting straight lines go for the basic heraldry like you mentioned. Its not like the infantry were rich like knights so would have had less fancy designs. I also have been suffering from a lack of painting time so great to hear that you are enjoying it again. Good luck with the projects.
Plasman
These guys are pretty nice to paint... but bugger doing hundreds of them back in the WFB days! My one mate in town who is into wargaming told me that Warcry is pretty good and you can just straight up use lizardmen and skaven in it, so looks like he'll have to teach me how to play! korocite
That is one fine looking rat. How did you paint it?
Plasman
Just GW and army painter paints thinned with a little medium, the blue is a gw contrast paint, then plenty of brown and black wash on appropriate parts. Slightly thinned paints work well on a white base coat for many things, ie the flesh colour doesn't just settle on as a uniform block of colour. Might go back in with a couple of highlights, but otherwise very basic fodder-infantry paint scheme without any real blending or layering 🙂 here's his little unfinished friends, I went with misc colours with the idea I'll need to identify them if used in warcry Oh and when I was fetching the minis from my hobby cupboard to paint I stepped on a mouse trap I had set underneath it 😆 Edited December 9, 2021 by Plasman
Plasman
Well I did a unit of quite-good-for-my-standard clan rats I'll have to take a picture of, but here we have a bunch of clan rats that were half painted when I bought them. Slapped on some basic colour on the ones that were only base coated in an hour. Now given they're missing shields and have mixed weapons and aren't painted well... they're skavenslaves! A whole 60pts worth of WFB models, should just dunk them each in brown wash and call it a day 😆 Edited December 19, 2021 by Plasman
Plasman
Just some lazy boxing day hobby. Have yet to work out how I want to paint these stormfiends, quite intimidating! I expect I'll have to bit the bullet and try layering some flesh tones on their beefcake... Splashing some paint on random models from the hobby box, as well as slapping some paint on the shitty cheap 2 dollar shop terrain I have, coupled with cheap hardware shop test pots it's quite passable! This guy is just so happy to have two swords.
Plasman
Is this deep burning I feel shame, or warp pox? I don't think I've ever bought this many new miniatures at once before... But sure as anything I got a job offer a few days after ordering it all so I won't have time to do so much hobby. Was a great idea for helping me land a job! Also here is a wonderful "les grognards" soldier painted up as a Space Frog. Really happy with the minimal effort tabletop ready look. Play The Gray
Congrats on the job offer! Surely no better motivation than an expensive hobby - my wife recently got back into the workforce to fund her K-pop addiction, you think plastic crack is expensive, then you see how much some cardboard is worth in those fandoms 🤨 Fingers crossed you still get plenty of time to paint up the rats. Plasman
I'm one of these FIFO workers, but even having a week off at a time you're so busy trying to run around and do everything it doesn't leave too much emotional energy for sitting down and painting mandolls I find 😅
Play The Gray
Ohh haha yeah I know what you mean, particularly this time of year with all the end of year festivities!
Plasman
Some more lazy, cool summer days perfect for watching some yt hobby videos and basing minis I've had for almost a decade. Quite cathartic to only need to slap on a bit of PVA then sprinkle some grit and stones over them without too much effort. Bought some craft acrylics from the 2 dollar shop so I'll see how they go for slapping down as a cheap and cheerful basing colour. Also got my plague rats based, and found out I've build the wheels of my doom wheel wrong so I'll have to get creative to get it all together : /
Plasman
Got the twice-yearly event known as "actually playing a damned game with my miniatures" tomorrow, so working on some terrain. Some $2 shop toy pieces and some hirst art moulds (which now that I think about it are extremely old fashioned since 3D printing exists!) Plasman
Had a good couple of games of OPR Grimdark with my mate before back to the mines for work. Now I've started on my Stormvermin! Tried a few things with my back 2 basix stone bases before settling on warpstone! I did want to get a dark grey or black stone with the green shining through, but the green jade-ish for the stone itself also looked great. Haven't got the cracks quite bright green/glowing enough for my taste, perhaps I need to use some white or yellow too? Only got some base coats on this fellow before the light went (I have a strong preference for natural lighting when painting) I got the army painter metallic and washes set in the mail when I was away, so interested to see how their "tones" go as a general wash on this test model.(black on silver metal, brown on everything else) I'll have to get some photos of the finished plague monks too, seems a fine line to get them just muddy enough without looking shabby, a very reasonable TT standard! Plasman
Applying PVA then sand to bases is so damned cathartic. These mantic orcs looks sort of derpy, but hey who cares I have 40-odd orcs now! This fellow is from a set of Frostgrave wizards so many bits and pieces to choose from when building them! This guy is telling you to RTFM. After many years of sitting in a box half-finished I finally sat down and have some attention to this fellow, with washes and dry brushing. korocite
Quite the eclectic bunch of projects you are working on. What are your thoughts on the quality of the Frostgrave minis?
Plasman
It's flipping brilliant. For $30? you get 4 torsos with a whole bunch of wizardly gubbins to choose from. For something like Warhammer fantasy (or other game systems I guess :P) that's great value for 4 hero models. The quality is good, probably on par with the best of WFB-era rank-and-file plastic kits.
