Blackadder's Scratch Building Projects

Blackadder

Recommended Posts

I call myself Blackadder.

I suppose I should offer my credentials as a means of introduction. I have been scratch building with styrene plastic for about 20 years. My son got me interested in the Warhammer 40K Universe at that time and we began purchasing model kits from GW and FW but the Superheavy tanks and the Titans really caught my interest. My First attempt was a Lucius Pattern Warhound modeled on thew ForgeWorld resin kit. I called my creation Lucie..... We'll meet up with Lucie further down this post but the pride of my Titan Stable is My Warlord.

Luteus Vexant Stands 160 feet (49 meters) tall.
This is not a kit, everything is handmade from scratch fabricated from individual bits of styrene. There are well over 10,000 bits of plastic glued together some no bigger than the head of a pin. "Luteus Vexant" is the name I chose for the Warlord It in Latin loosely translated means "Dirty Harry." The Titan has a full interior with five levels completely furnished and manned with a crew. I am still in the process of wiring the lighting and it needs more paint.

My current Project is an Emperor Titan. Shown here along side my Warhound Lucie

The basic octagonal structure that is.  There are still two levels of surface detail to apply but aside from the AA cannon emplacements this will be the height of the Imperator version of this Titan.

I'm so confused as to what the seemingly interchangeable names and classes of the Emperor Titans. Initially I set out to build a Warmonger version to match my Lucius Warlord and Warhound (seen here for scale). Lucie was my first major scratchbuild project and she is slightly more robust compared to the Forge World Warhound Version.

And finally a head on shot with the various Adeptus Mechanicus Skitarii slated to infest the upper works of this monstrosity.

Thanks for the replies guys. So what is the problem with AU?

Resting On One's Laurels:

Before I get too smug and self-satisfied I just repaired the interior of my Warlord. and I was surprised at the lengths my OCD drove me three or so years ago. As I contemplate doing an interior for my Emperor Titan I thought I'd refresh myself on my previous construction.

Over the years the glue had lost it's grip on the aluminum impregnated wall coatings I used for much of this model inside and out and pieces were rattling around inside. I found some two decks down in the Engineering bay.

Anyway once all put together I fired up the interior lighting (surprisingly it all functioned) and took these images so I don't have to disassemble it again until when and if I decide to upgrade the paint.

So here's five pictures of the Command deck and Tech Priest balcony replete with Altar to the Machine God, Omnissiah.

Starting with the egress to the Command deck through the entry port.

I don't know if I've posted these or not other than in the construction phase. Most certainly not on Facebook or any of the new forums I frequent.

I've gotta straighten that railing.............

Never mind the railing Blackadder; What about that bloody great hole in the deck?

Serendipity Once Again Rears It's Ugly Head:

I was going to keep these to myself until the Warlord was reassembled but this was too good to pass up without comment, the effect would be lost in the overall presentation of the completed model...........

http://i.imgur.com/yWdZDbM.jpg
yWdZDbMl.jpg

I wish I could take credit for this but it came about purely by accident; I noticed when I was applying the armour veneers that the 'Testors' glue was slightly dissolving the 0,25 MM (0.010 inch) sheet styrene but until highlighting these large panels I had no idea to what extent. The aluminum powder accentuates the dissolved areas giving a millennia old worn and weathered appearance that probably could not have been achieved on purpose.

http://i.imgur.com/4JzpGjG.jpg
4JzpGjGl.jpg

The effect was simple to achieve I just took the tube of glue and squeezing ever so slightly applied threadlike trails all over the area to be covered with the pre-cut sheet styrene. I the rubbed the panel until the glue set and sealed the edges with thin set solvent.

Even the mistakes and warped panels lend character to the armour simulation battle damage or in the case of the prominent vertical line in the first image where I removed a strip of styrene and applied it diagonally for greater aesthetic appeal looks like the residue of a centuries old modification.

Of course there may be some that do not like this mottled effect but to me this battle weary biped looks the better for the superficial damage.

To my mates from AU I'm not sure if I posted construction notes on the Warlord or was that before I joined AU. I was browsing back through ancient post to find items of interest and came across these......

I can't decide if I like this or not. I painted the underside of the carapace components first to get practice. When I got to the outer armour and more visible mechanisms of the model. First everything looked too dark so I dry brushed some streaks of gray primer on the left hand side bay panel to compare to the right side that doesn't have brushed primer. That lightened it up a tad.....

I mistakenly used metallics paint on the core radiators and that won't do at all.

On the other hand the Tech Priests are looking better gilt trimmed and the Captain Nemo Nautilus style computer consoles make a nice touch.

This is what I was looking for but I didn't realize I never took images of the reactor bay when finished....

I found some of my construction notes of the interior before I had decided on a colour scheme.

Command Deck Front Bulkhead Redux:

I was never satisfied with the future tech look of the front bulkhead that was not in keeping with the battle weary slapdash Gothic interior of the 40K universe.

The main hull in my estimation is five decks high starting with the Void Generator housings not shown in the included images due to the fact that they must be removed for visual access of the lower decks.

Deck four is the upper Observation gallery and the Adeptus Mechanicus  Altar recently updated now with 28 MM scale figure.

Deck three which I call the Command deck even though I have been advised that Titans do not require large spaces as they have a minimal crew.

http://i.imgur.com/iqNJDfL.jpg
iqNJDfLl.jpg

I rationalize Luteus Vexant is a tactical command vehicle that has a Command group of officers.

http://i.imgur.com/tXya71T.jpg
tXya71Tl.jpg

Below that is the Fusion Reactor, I have no idea what a fuctioning Fusion Reactor would look like but I imagine it would glow with Cherenkov radiation represented by to central component on deck five.

To either side of the Reactor deck are the triangular shaped cooling grids and coolant recovery system that recirculates the reactor's sodium transfer medium.

Forum software was a decade out of date and I couldn't get a response from the owner to update it.  Plus it didn't have SSL encryption, so posed a security risk for users.  So I decided to start a new board to try and keep the community going.

The pics you've found are pretty cool 🙂  I do like the lit up interior of the Warlord.

Heyy. Welcome to the new boards Lord Blackadder. Glad to see you made it.

Really love the progress you've made on the Warlord, your thread on WAU is the one i've always followed. Keen to see it finally finished.

Ha! None of my work is ever finished.... Just reviewing these images taken five or so years ago makes me itch to improve the interior and add more detail to the engineering deck. Again I'll address the ruddy great hole in the command deck and use the waffle lenses to flesh out the walls and floor.

Oh! and I forgot I have updates for the Emperor Titan as well.

Thanks for the reply.

Another segment of my stroll down memory lane is my Reaver Conversion kit where I designed quick change armour for my Mars Pattern Reaver. All the armour is removable if I so desire to change it back to the original FW item. Gack! What am I saying. The Reaver is the Edsel of the FW Titan team in my opinion. Who ordered that?

Anyway it was an interesting project to attempt but it still lies in the box waiting to be finished. Someday when the inspiration moves me I might resume the effort.

Here in the next few entries are a few images of where the project stands today.....

All the major components are done, whew!

So enough of history past Here is my Current Project.

First Time Together This Year:

Toppling damage has been repaired. Blackadder is on the mend. All's right with the world and today is the first time I am putting this all together for a progress report. TADA!
First I am finally confident I have solved the problem of the superstructure so here is the solution.
The egg crate structure at the rear of the deck can be shifted back as needs be but it will form the base for the rear superstructure components.
Y6RhhcK.jpg

Y6RhhcKl.jpg

The blue boxes simulate the height of the rear components above the front components. It was there that I had the problem and now we can proceed with the structures on the deck. There will be a cathedral roof between the two rear towers and the huge main gun will protrude between the statues.

Here's a side image.

And a left side image aerial view.

Ho hum you say; what else is new......
It's a surprise even for ME!

Thanks for the reply. I's not demotivation so much as my Township duties that take precedences over model building. That and illness over the past few months that drained my ambition for this project. All that seems to be behind me now and over the past few weeks I've addressed the problems with renewed vigor....

On with the next installment.

Are You Ready For This:

One of the first things I built for this Titan was the Plasma Cannon. Quite possibly the coolest weapon conceived by GW/FW and I chose this for my Emperor Titan.

https://i.imgur.com/VIZTmxK.jpg
VIZTmxKl.jpg

Of course I had no idea how big to make it and it has been one of my main concerns whether it was too big or too small for all these years until yesterday as I write.
Yesterday with the Titan in one piece for the first time this year I decided to bite the bullet and hang the weapon on the mount arm with the following result.

https://i.imgur.com/r22XPNz.jpgr22XPNzl.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/V2xYYqZ.jpgV2xYYqZl.jpg

In all I'm quite pleased with the result.

Emperor Titan looks more than impressive. What weapon do have planned for the other arm? And i'm sure you've mentioned before, how tall is he currently/going to be? He looks like he would tower over a small child.

With such an outpouring of interest I had my son come over to help me assemble the two components.

The good news is the legs can support the weight of the upper torso. The bad news is it is at the moment rather top heavy.

https://i.imgur.com/w4DmHxN.jpg
w4DmHxNl.jpg

All that will change when I install the rear components and the interior. The model right now is 46 inches tall assembled with I'm figuring another 10 inches more to be added to the superstructure.

The author to scale is 75 inches tall and the 28mm scale Skitarii and the two Space Marines are added for comparison
Time To Take Stock.....

After a week hiatus I revived with new inspirations on how to proceed. The Lower sixth of the cannon assembly vexed me until I realized where my problem lay. It is pretty much what is found wrong with a majority of scratchbuilds; they are too square and straight sided. The lower rail needed some slight curvature to the sides and base.

q3M6lG9l.jpg

Fortunately the material I am using has a taper for ease of extraction from the mould.

biPfc7Sl.jpg

Playing on that feature I came up with the correct angles to duplicate the artist's rendering.

This will be more apparent in subsequent images.

My VAB:

Behold my new Vehicle Assembly Building

Dedicated to the Emperor Titan in all it's iterations, I've grown tired of this thing toppling when fully assembled.

The VAB has an open space floor to fourth level ceiling of just over 51 inches (130 centimeters.)

The Wine was Sour:

I've gone about as far with this as I can without correcting grievous mistakes I've tried to lived with for the past year or so. If I am to complete this model the problems must be addressed now.

The following images are of the upper torso as it is right now.....

https://imgur.com/9uqE1qn

The yoke arms are too low and hang too far down into the interior decks.

The first step is to take the model completly apart and remove the yoke.

https://imgur.com/oiazU2m

I cut about 1.5 inches off the top of the yoke which seems about right...

I sealed the top with 0.020 inch styrene...
