9th ed Discussion

So, there have been a few photos doing the rounds on Facebook of the new rules.  One of which is regarding victory points.  Apparently you get 10 VP for having a fully painted army.  An interesting development and one I like 🙂  May help reduce the bare plastic seen in a lot of armies these days.

This will be up there with the Settra doesn't Kneel rule from early AOS

Which was perhaps the highlight of the massive and unreasonable overreaction from the horde of manbabies.

I'm all for it. If you both have painted armies then it's a non issue. I also expect it will not be a blanket rule for all games, but rather part of a specific mode of play.

whoa...... so many things that will have a huge effect.....

fallback , morale,  fly, new points,  big things Shooting in combat, Blast weapons, Chargers still go first but your  opponent selects a unit first..... in Fight phase (so always fights first units just got a huge boost),  5" vertical coherency and engagement,  non-coherency can casualty loss  if you remove from the middle....,

Are 6" heroic intervention Slanneshi Daemon princes the new meta?

Looks like Indomnitus is confirmed $198USD, so maybe 300 here?

Is that with a discount?

The coherency rules are certainly interesting. I do hope it doesn't mean a return to the positioning of unit hell that was 6th edition, but otherwise, I think it's an interesting way to prevent people causing conga lines in combat etc.

Blast weapons getting a small boost is good. Love that they have a minimum amount of hits now.

More than likely...they are competing with a Warhammer store across the road! 😅

Thoughts after my first 9e game (mind you I didn't play 8... so as someone coming from 5e)

Interesting how the rules are laid out, a base rule is laid out then later on the exception gets made. Meant that when trying to look some stuff up I had to flick back to a previous section, and often the rule was simply there by exemption. ie, I was unsure if vehicle squads used morale tests and simply had to believe they did as there was no mention specifically about them.

As an IG player (who was trying out orks) it was really nice to see sentinels actually being sort of decent, 2 armoured sentinels worked marvellously as decent roadblocks. I attacked two of them with warbikers and killakans to very little effect! Then the IG player retreated them so he could keep shooting at my units!

Core rules didn't have cover rules in them so we just played with what we remembered from previews. Also adapted the 5e obscured rule, so if using LoS a unit or vehicle was half obscured we added the -1 to hit. I'm guessing in the real rules that doesn't exist and it's purely to do with terrain interaction and whether the firing line crosses over a KEYWORD bit of terrain.

New morale rules are cool, being able to have complete control of your units no more dancing back and forwards with retreat/regroup mechanics.

I think 8th to 9th is more refinement than 'entirely new edition'. I really enjoy 8th and I think 9th will remove most of the stuff that people take umbrage with. It will be interesting to see what problems manifest themselves in the new edition - for there will always be something.

The only thing I don't like is that you can't make a big conga line of units anymore - but that's more an immersion thing. I know why they've done it from a gameplay perspective. Apart from that, I like all the changes they've made to the game and I cannot wait to dig in.

the Coherency restriction to conga lines is a big one and it will actually hurt small units more than  larger ones. (Blast weapons is for that 😉 ).
The flip side to Coherency is that:
-  small 1-5 man units will be easily swept aside in the fire power of 9th ed  and with split fire the "wasted firepower" will be negligible.
- medium 6-10 sized units cannot maintain coherency once you get less than 3 so no more combimelta+PF sgt pullling off lastman stands  or killing that last big thing or holding an objective hidden....
- large 11+ units will just be mashed by blast weapons making -1 to hit and Feel no pain pretty much must-include for hordes and it probably won't be enough.

I don't think it will be good for the game or list variety.

I'm confused as to your point about medium sized units not being able to maintain coherency.  As long as you remove casualties properly, it should be fine?

I don't think you'll see too many blast weapon spam armies though.  People will need to balance against the fact they could be facing MSU or Horde armies.  They may prefer the reliability of fixed number of shots over the blast randomness vs MSU and so structure their lists accordingly.

if you get a 10 man unit to 2 it dies. coherency is based on starting strength.

I think you will see a lot of things like Plasmacanon spam (with the 1d3 maxing out at 3 hits) once they work it out.

Nope: per page 198: while a unit has....

At no point does it mention starting strength, it uses the term 'while it has x or more models'

what will break units is terrain features preventing them being placed in coherency - don't park your transports against impassable terrain.

As someone from 5th, all these command points and VPs we have to track is quite daunting. The CP system in general, I dunno I get they wanted to give players more choices to make but it really seems like the main focus of the game now.

That's why I have never managed to get back into it. But I have a new rulebook, new army, and the time in lock down to not paint.

The new mission criteria are too complicated.

It is what happens when OTT  (read ITC) groups get there influence into the rulebook....

early feedback indicates that Primary conditions don't make alot of difference (fairly equal for both players) so most of the games are won in your secondary choices.....

A lot of bookkeeping for basically the same results...

For obvious reasons (live in VIC) I haven't tried it yet.

However as someone who plays Epic40k, tracking multiple objectives isn't that bad.

I really enjoy the matched play.  Easy enough to keep track of - just write up a score sheet at start. 5 columns for turns, 4 rows per player for victory conditions.

Well my trying to dip a toe back into 40k has worked just as I planned - I landed a new FIFO job and thus have no more time or energy to invest and actually play the game!

BUMP!

Oof, I've tried to dip my toe into reading the SM codex (well wah's version of it anyway...) and holy shit the game is such a web of spaghetti... The web of things applying or not applying to certain CODE WORDS, and then the main rules all dressed up with words like BATTLE FORGED and such... much more complex than old 5th edition I have to say... and it seems like GWs efforts to simply stuff or give them recognisable fancy names just makes it harder!

Getting my Indomitus marines painted up as Blood Ravens nicely, and even had a game (using One Page Rules..) with the mate I gifted the necrons to.

The game seems to always fall back into the same rut of being overly complicated. I'm finding more fun in smaller games. Necromunda, Kill Team etc.
