DiPolar
Hi, I'm getting back into the Hobby after years away. Not looking to be ultra competitive, mainly looking to increase my social interaction. Trying to work out which army to start with, based on aesthetics I'm most interested in the Tau and Space Marines, though Necrons and Adeptus Mechanicus are close behind. Any friendly advice or commentary on who might be easier to start with, that's not super focused on the meta side of things, would be greatly appreciated. Krefey
Space Marines probably have the most support and due to the large range of chapters have a lot of options, but also change the most frequently. Necrons are the new "big bad" in 40k atm, so have seen the most recent love for a faction other than Space Marines. I must admit, I don't know Tau and Ad Mech very well these days, so can't really comment on those.
Vulkan209
Space Marines will be easier to start with, Tau will be more rewarding to learn, to a point. 9th edition has lots of minor layers of things to adjust to and learn. 9th edition is starting to bloat out somewhat, but at least there's a lot of showing in addition to the telling. Space Marines, despite being the common denominator army are the most broad and diverse faction. They have lots of options, a huge model range and these days you pick between firstborn (oldmarines) or Primaris. Or mix them, I guess? But all the diversity comes at a price in that there's lots of little moving parts to remember on top of whatever you have to do in 9th. For Tau, they will be easier to learn. But the one thing you learn quickly about Tau (that everyone will tell you) is that they shoot. That's it. They like guns and all their options move them toward having more guns. This isn't a bad thing, shooting is the better of the two phases of the game, but eventually you may become somewhat bored with rolling dice and removing your opponent's models from the table. Maybe. I did (and also someone nicked my Tau) and looked elsewhere and other people I talk to say the same thing.
